The stomach of Sati near Somnath — Chandrabhaga, she who is adorned with the moon, at the first Jyotirlinga's sacred coastal site.
Prabhas Peetha at Prabhas Patan, Veraval, Gujarat, marks where the stomach of Sati fell. The Goddess is Chandrabhaga ("adorned with the moon" or "the Bhaga of the Moon") and the Bhairav is Vakratund (the Curved-Trunked — a form of Ganesha or Bhairav). Prabhas Patan is the sacred site of the Somnath Jyotirlinga, where Lord Krishna departed from the earth after being struck by a hunter's arrow, and where the Triveni Sangam of three rivers meets the Arabian Sea.
The combination of the Prabhas Shakti Peetha with the Somnath Jyotirlinga makes this coastal Gujarat site one of the most theologically complete in western India — Shiva and Shakti both present, along with the departing point of Krishna (Vishnu's avatar). Chandrabhaga — connected to the moon and menstrual/cosmic cycles — is a particularly appropriate Shakti at the stomach Peetha, which is associated in yoga with the Manipura chakra of fire and will.
Somnath is accessible by bus and road from Ahmedabad (410 km) and Rajkot (180 km). Nearest railway: Veraval Station (6 km) or Somnath Station.
October to March. Combine with the Somnath Sound and Light show (evening) and the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga (18 km north) for a full Saurashtra Shakti-Shiva day.
The Somnath Sound and Light show (evening, ₹100) narrates the temple's dramatic history against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea — one of the finest such shows in India.
The Stomach of Goddess Sati fell at Prabhas, consecrating this land as a Shakti Peetha. The Shakti here is Chandrabhaga and the guardian Bhairav is Vakratund.
