The upper lip of Sati at Bhairav Parvat — Avanti, the eternal, on the sacred hill of the Bhairav who guards the time-city of Ujjain.
Bhairavparvat Peetha marks where the upper lip of Sati fell on Bhairav Parvat (Bhairav's Hill) near Ujjain. The Goddess is Avanti ("the Eternal") and the Bhairav is Lambkarna (the Long-Eared). Note that this is distinct from the Ujayini Peetha (#13, wrist) — Ujjain contains two Shakti Peethas, reflecting the extraordinary sacred concentration of this ancient city. Bhairav Parvat hill, with its Bhairavnath temple, overlooks the Shipra river.
The dual Peethas of Ujjain — Avanti (upper lip, Bhairav Parvat) and Mangal Chandika (wrist, Ujayini) — together make Ujjain a uniquely dense Shakti-Shaiva pilgrimage site. The upper lip falling on the hill of the Bhairav creates a direct symbolic connection: the Bhairav guards the divine mouth from which sacred speech (mantra, prayer, the Vedas) emerges. Avanti — meaning eternal, or the name of the ancient Avanti kingdom — places this Peetha in deep historical time.
Ujjain is on the Ratlam-Bhopal railway line — direct trains from Indore (55 km), Bhopal and Mumbai. By road from Indore: 55 km (1 hour).
Year-round. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela (every 12 years) is the supreme event. Navratri and the daily Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar are the regular highlights.
The Ujjain circuit: Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti (4am) → Ujayini Peetha → Bhairavparvat Peetha → Harsiddhi Mata → Ram Ghat Aarti (sunset) fills a complete day.
The Upper Lip of Goddess Sati fell at Bhairavparvat, consecrating this land as a Shakti Peetha. The Shakti here is Avanti and the guardian Bhairav is Lambkarna.
