Four sacred river cities take turns hosting the largest peaceful gathering on earth — a rotation of divine grace that has continued for over a thousand years.
The Kumbh Mela celebrates the victory of the gods over the demons in the battle for the Amrit Kumbh — the pot of immortal nectar. During the churning of the cosmic ocean, a pot of amrit (nectar of immortality) was produced. As the gods fled with it, drops fell at four locations on earth — Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. Each of these four sites now hosts a Kumbh Mela at specific astronomical intervals, when bathing in the sacred river at that location is believed to grant liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
The Kumbh cycle is governed by the position of Jupiter (Brihaspati) and the Sun (Surya) in specific zodiac signs — a different combination for each of the four cities. The Ardh Kumbh (half Kumbh) occurs at Prayagraj and Haridwar midway through the 12-year cycle. The Maha Kumbh occurs at Prayagraj every 144 years (12 × 12 Jupiter cycles) — the 2025 Maha Kumbh was the first in 144 years.

The most auspicious bathing days — typically Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya and Basant Panchami at Prayagraj. These are the peak days drawing 30–50 million pilgrims in a single day.
The naked ash-smeared ascetics of the Shaiva tradition enter the river first in a spectacular procession of elephants, horses and chariots. Their bathing is considered to charge the waters with spiritual power.
State tourism departments and the Kumbh administration build massive temporary cities of hundreds of thousands of tents — book government tent city accommodation 6–12 months in advance for Shahi Snan dates.
Mobile networks collapse on peak Shahi Snan days. Designate a fixed meeting point with your group. Carry only essentials — pickpocketing is common in large crowds. Follow police crowd management instructions.
