The heart of Sati — at Baidyanath Dham, the unique site where both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha are enshrined together.
Vaiddyanath (Baidyanath) Dham at Deoghar, Jharkhand, holds a unique distinction: it is simultaneously one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the Shakti Peetha of Sati's heart. No other site in India holds both designations. The Goddess is Jaya Durga ("the victorious Durga"), and the Bhairav is Vaiddyanath himself — the Lord Physician who heals all afflictions. The heart of Sati falling here gave this site a special association with healing and divine love.
According to legend, Ravana — the demon king of Lanka — was a devoted Shiva worshipper. He performed severe austerities at Kailash and offered his ten heads one by one to Shiva. Moved by this extraordinary devotion, Shiva manifested here to heal Ravana and granted him a boon. The Jyotirlinga was established at this spot. The combination of the Jyotirlinga (of Shiva) and the Shakti Peetha (of Sati's heart) makes Deoghar the most complete Shiva-Shakti pilgrimage site in India.
